Here’s how to spot an electrical emergency and what to do:

Common Electrical Emergencies

  1. Power Outage (Not Load Shedding!)
    If your house suddenly goes dark and it’s not scheduled load shedding:
    – Check the DB board
    – If nothing helps, call an electrician.
  2. Burning Smell or Burnt Outlet
    – Turn off power at the main switch
    – Don’t use the outlet
    – Call a pro this could start a fire.
  3. Shocks or Sparks
    – If someone is shocked, switch off the power first
    – Don’t touch them directly
    – Call 10177 or 112 from a mobile
  4. Electrical Fire
    – Never use water
    – Use a fire extinguisher if safe
    – Call the fire department immediately
  5. Fallen Power Line
    – Stay far away (at least 10m)
    – Report it to Eskom or your local municipality

✅ Be Prepared

– Know where your DB board is
– Keep emergency numbers saved
– Don’t ignore flickering lights or tripping breakers
