Despite struggling to meet power demand in South Africa in the past due to its ageing infrastructure, Eskom has recently signed a new five year agreement with its neighbor, Namibia.

“Eskom has turned around and we are now open for business with surplus capacity available to empower economic growth,” Eskom said in a statement.

“This agreement provides energy security to Namibia and allows for economic development and growth in the country without electricity availability concerns.”

This has been enhanced by the following reasons according to Eskom:

  • Power system remains stable due to rigorous plant maintenance
  • Plant availability has improved to 77.3% from 70.3%
  • 3 103MW added to the national grid as a result of improved plant maintenance
  • 8 030MW added to the national grid since inception of the new build programme in 2005
  • Eskom has a surplus of 5 600MW at peak, due to improved plant performance and new additional capacity.

Namibia, where power supply is under strain, normally imports electricity from neighbouring countries.
